(COLDWATER) – A Coldwater business was damaged in a Tuesday fire.
The Coldwater Fire Department says they were sent out after Branch County Central Dispatch received some calls around 5:30 PM of smoke at Grand Occasions, located at 612 North Union City Road. In addition, the Bronson and Quincy Fire Departments were dispatched to provide mutual aid. When firefighters arrived, they called for more mutual aid and the Union City and Lakeland Fire Departments responded.
Coldwater Fire Chief David Schmaltz says it took several hours to extinguish the blaze because of the size of the building, and due to the lack of water in the area. He says the departments spent several hours shuttling tankers back and forth from a water source two miles away. Coldwater firefighters used a suction hose in a nearby cistern to draw water for the pumper trucks.
The fire was eventually put out at 11:30 PM.
Schmaltz says the building housed chairs, tents, tables and other items.
No damage estimates have been given. Investigators will be back Wednesday to see if they can determine what caused the fire.
