UAW Strike Against General Motors Continues Into Week Three
Tuesday, October 1, 2019

After a weekend of continued talks between powers within General Motors and the United Auto Workers, the strike among UAW members is now looking like its going strong into a third week with talks expected to continue today.

Striking employees can begin collecting $250 a week in strike pay that breaks down to $50 per weekday, which equates to $6.25 an hour, below the federal minimum wage of $7.25.

Talks between GM and UAW progressed to earlier in the week last week with both sides hopeful an agreement would have been reached by the end of the weekend. General Motors agreed to pick up hourly employees’ health care costs once more on Thursday, which was seen as a signal the strike could be drawing to a close.

The issues still at hand between the two sides that have not been resolved continue to be conditions for temporary workers, as the union wants temp workers to see an easier path to full-time work. The UAW also wants GM to keep paying a big chunk of workers’ health care costs and change its profit-sharing formula.

Currently, temporary workers are union members doing the same work as permanent employees, but only get half the pay and far fewer benefits.
