"Doc" Claude Davis, 1926-2025

(ANGOLA) To generations of residents, he was simply known as "Doc Davis." To the Angola community, he was a trusted surgeon, a steady presence in times of crisis, and a man whose quiet service shaped countless lives. Dr. Claude E. Davis died peacefully at his home on Dec. 26, 2025. He was 99.

For decades, Doc Davis cared for patients across Steuben County and beyond, earning a reputation as a calm, highly skilled surgeon who saved lives and treated families with dignity and respect. His medical career and public service made him one of Angola's most widely known and respected citizens.

Dr. Davis was born June 14, 1926, in New Albany, Indiana. He graduated from New Albany High School in 1944, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville in 1947, and received his medical degree in 1951. He completed his internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette.

His professional service included membership in the American Society of Surgeons beginning in 1961 and appointment to the American Board of Surgery in 1969. He also served on the MSD Board of Directors in Steuben County and worked as a deputy with the Angola Police Department.

A proud United States Army veteran of World War II, Dr. Davis was awarded the Purple Heart. Those close to him said he carried his military service with humility and rarely spoke of it.

Outside of medicine, Doc Davis was known for his wide-ranging talents and curiosity. He was a skilled mechanic, a licensed pilot, and a lifelong learner. Family members described him as steady, thoughtful, and deeply devoted to those he loved.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary J. Davis, six children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his sister, Elizabeth Davis McGee of Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, and a sister.

In accordance with his wishes, no public services will be held.

Arrangements were entrusted to Weicht Funeral Home.

Those who knew him say Doc Davis leaves behind a lasting legacy of compassion, service, and integrity--one that will be remembered in Angola for generations.
