(ANGOLA) - Former Steuben County Sheriff Rick Lewis has died at the age of 78, according to family members. Lewis passed away Tuesday at his home on Snow Lake. Lewis served two consecutive terms as Steuben County sheriff from 2003 through 2010. He was first elected in 2002. Prior to his election, Lewis spent about 30 years with the Indiana State Police, retiring as a master trooper.
During his time as sheriff, Lewis was known for bringing a state police-style structure and discipline to the sheriff's office. Current Sheriff R.J. Robinson said Lewis remained supportive of the department even after retiring from office.
Lewis was a 1966 graduate of Garrett High School and later attended Butler University, where he played football. He began his law enforcement career in 1972 with the Indiana State Police.
In addition to policing, Lewis was active in athletics and coaching. He served as an assistant football coach at Angola High School and continued playing pickup basketball at Tri-State and later Trine University for many years.
Lewis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margo, their three children, Matthew, Andy, and Sara Weber, and nine grandchildren.
