(FORT WAYNE) - A 17-year-old cold case has been solved in Fort Wayne, leading to an arrest on multiple rape charges.

Police say Brad Battershell was taken into custody Friday after DNA evidence linked him to a rape that occurred in 2008. At the time, investigators were unable to identify a suspect, and the case went cold.

Earlier this year, detectives used new DNA technology to reexamine evidence collected at the crime scene. Through the Combined DNA Index System, known as CODIS, investigators with the Fort Wayne Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Unit were able to make a match.

Battershell now faces two counts of rape, three counts of criminal deviate conduct, and one count of sexual battery. Police say he was previously arrested on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge in 2004.

Battershell is currently being held in the Allen County Jail as the case moves forward.
