INDIANAPOLIS (WLKI)- Hoosiers have until Monday, Oct. 5, to register to vote ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is reminding residents who plan to complete voter registration at a BMV branch that they must do so by the deadline.
Eligible Hoosiers may register to vote or check their registration status online at Indianavoters.in.gov. Registration information is also available through the Indiana Secretary of State's Office.
The BMV offers free state-issued identification cards for voting purposes to eligible Indiana residents who do not have a driver's license. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, provide the required documentation and be at least 18 years old on or before the next general or municipal election.
Residents seeking a new state ID card or driver's license must provide proof of identity, a document showing their Social Security number, proof of lawful status and two documents showing Indiana residency.
Examples of accepted documents include a birth certificate or passport for proof of identity and lawful status; a Social Security card, W-2 or pay stub for proof of Social Security number; and a recent utility bill or bank statement for proof of residency.
Anyone whose legal name differs from the name listed on identity documents must also provide proof of the name change.
The BMV said voters should not wait until the final day if they need to gather documents or visit a branch.
