MARION, Ind. (WLKI)- One person died and two firefighters sustained minor injuries in an apartment fire Friday afternoon in Grant County.
According to the Marion Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched to the 3600 block of South Prince Hall Drive at approximately 12:45 p.m. following a report of a structure fire with a possible trapped occupant.
Marion Health Hospital Emergency Medical Services personnel were the first responders to arrive. They found smoke coming from the apartment building and made multiple attempts to rescue the occupant.
The fire department said heavy smoke and extreme heat prevented those initial rescue attempts from succeeding.
After firefighters arrived, crews entered the apartment and removed the trapped occupant from the building.
Emergency personnel performed lifesaving measures, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are withholding the victim's identity until a positive identification is made and family members are notified.
Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries while responding to the fire. Both received medical evaluations and treatment and are expected to recover.
No additional information was released about the extent of damage to the building or whether other residents were displaced.
The cause and circumstances of the fire remain under investigation. The Marion Fire Department is coordinating the investigation with the Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office.
