COLDWATER, Mich. (WLKI)- The Branch County Jail has recognized the first two people to graduate from its Moral Reconation Therapy program, an initiative designed to promote personal accountability and reduce repeat offenses.
According to WTVB, Derek Butler and Dorrean McBride became the jail's first graduates after completing the voluntary, step-based curriculum.
The program was facilitated by Kylie Tyler of Pines Behavioral Health Services. Moral Reconation Therapy is an evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral treatment approach that seeks to improve moral reasoning and decision-making while helping participants establish healthier goals.
Participation in the Branch County Jail program is voluntary. Graduates do not receive reduced sentences, dismissed charges or other external benefits for completing it.
Instead, participants choose to work through the curriculum as part of their personal growth and rehabilitation. The program asks participants to examine their behavior, accept responsibility for their decisions and develop strategies intended to support lasting change.
Branch County sheriff's officials praised Butler and McBride for the time, effort and commitment they devoted to completing the program.
Officials said their graduation represents an important milestone for the jail's rehabilitation efforts and establishes an example for future participants.
The program is part of a broader local effort to provide people in the justice system with tools aimed at promoting long-term behavioral change and reducing recidivism after their release.
