INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLKI) - Gov. Mike Braun has proclaimed August 2 through 8 as Emergency Management Agency Appreciation Week in Indiana.
The recognition honors emergency managers who help communities prepare for, respond to, recover from and reduce the impact of disasters and other hazards.
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security highlighted that work through Operation Broken Transmission, a full-scale exercise held at three sites in central Indiana.
The exercise challenged local emergency management agencies to continue operating during a complete communications failure. Emergency managers from multiple districts worked through the scenario using coordination, problem-solving and backup procedures.
Mary Moran, director of the IDHS Office of Emergency Management, said emergency managers are a key part of life-saving response efforts and often work long hours away from their families to keep communities safe.
IDHS will feature emergency managers on social media throughout the week and is encouraging residents to learn more about their county emergency management agency and consider volunteering.
