(FORT WAYNE) - The Fort Wayne Zoo opened its new bald eagle exhibit Wednesday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The exhibit's first resident is a bald eagle named Liberty. He can be found in the former walkthrough aviary area in Australian Adventure.

Liberty arrived at the zoo June 11 and spent time in quarantine to make sure he was healthy before moving into the habitat.

The zoo says Liberty sustained injuries that prevent him from being safely released back into the wild. He will serve as an ambassador animal, helping educate visitors about bald eagles and wildlife conservation.

Michelle Smurl, vice president of animal care and conservation education, said the Fort Wayne Zoo has not had eagles since the 1990s. Because bald eagles are federally protected, the zoo had to go through an approval process before being deemed adequate.

Smurl said Liberty is at least 5 years old. Bald eagles can live up to 30 years, and she said she hopes the zoo will be able to house him for at least 15 more years.

The new habitat features a red, white and blue patriotic entrance, opening just ahead of America's 250th birthday.

Another eagle named Spirit is expected to join Liberty in the exhibit later this season.
