(LANSING) - Michigan Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt has suspended his campaign for governor.

Nesbitt announced the decision Monday on X, just hours after President Donald Trump endorsed fellow Republican candidate John James.

Nesbitt launched his "Make It In Michigan" campaign about 18 months ago. In his announcement, he urged Republicans to unite ahead of the election and formally endorsed James, calling him a decorated combat veteran and proven businessman.

Nesbitt wrote that a divided primary would only help Democrats and said party unity is needed heading into the general election.

His departure narrows the Republican field to three candidates. Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox and businessman Perry Johnson both said they will remain in the race despite Trump's endorsement of James.

The eventual Republican nominee will face the Democratic nominee in the race to succeed term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Democratic candidates include Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.

Nesbitt said he will continue serving as Michigan Senate Republican Leader while directing campaign resources to support James.
