(STURGIS) - Sturgis Hospital will cease operations at noon on Friday, June 19, after years of financial challenges.

Hospital officials announced the closure Tuesday, citing declining reimbursement rates, rising operational costs and a sustained decrease in patient utilization.

The hospital said leadership and its Board of Directors explored acquisition opportunities, partnerships and other options to secure the facility's future, but a sustainable path forward could not be achieved.

The closure will affect all hospital departments and services, including the Emergency Department, Endoscopy, Surgery, Laboratory, Medical Imaging, Physical Therapy, Cardiac Rehabilitation, outpatient clinics and supporting ancillary departments.

Hospital officials said patients with upcoming appointments will be contacted and arrangements made for care at other facilities.

Anyone experiencing a medical emergency is being directed to the nearest emergency department, including Parkview LaGrange Hospital, Beacon Three Rivers Hospital and Insight Hospital Coldwater.

Sturgis Hospital transitioned to an outpatient-based health system in 2018, resulting in the layoff of about 60 full-time employees. In 2022, the Sturgis City Commission approved a $645,000 loan to help the hospital remain operational while awaiting additional state funding. Changes in state law later allowed the facility to become a rural emergency hospital on January 1, 2023.

Patients seeking copies of their medical records can contact the hospital at 269-651-7824.
