(ANGOLA) - A surge of tropical humidity is expected to push heat index values close to 100 degrees across northeast Indiana on Wednesday and Thursday, creating potentially dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Forecasters say temperatures and humidity levels will gradually build through the first half of the week before peaking during the middle of the week.

Monday will bring partly to mostly cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms possible and a high near 88 degrees. The added humidity will make it feel closer to 95 degrees at times. Showers become more likely Monday night with lows around 69.

Tuesday will remain unsettled with scattered showers and thunderstorms under mostly cloudy skies. High temperatures are expected to reach about 86 degrees.

The hottest weather arrives Wednesday. High temperatures are forecast near 90 degrees, while humidity levels could push heat index values close to 100 degrees. A few storms are possible, but the primary concern will be the heat and humidity.

Thursday is expected to be even warmer with highs around 91 degrees and heat index values again approaching 100 degrees. Scattered thunderstorms remain possible.

Relief is expected by Friday as a cold front moves through the region. Morning rain chances will give way to partly sunny skies with temperatures falling back into the mid-80s.

The weekend forecast calls for highs in the 80s, with a mix of sun, clouds and occasional chances for rain.

Health officials remind residents that heat-related illnesses can develop quickly during periods of high humidity and extreme heat. People are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and check on vulnerable family members and neighbors.
