(COLDWATER) - Coldwater residents will soon see higher water and wastewater bills after city council approved utility rate increases Monday night following discussion about future infrastructure needs and public concerns over affordability.

Council approved a 3.9% increase for water service and a 3% increase for wastewater service following recommendations from the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities.

Officials said the average residential customer using about 5,000 gallons per month would see water bills increase about 75 cents monthly, while wastewater bills would increase about $1.20 monthly.

During the meeting, Coldwater Board of Public Utilities Director Paul Jacoby said the increases are tied to long-term infrastructure planning and future growth on the east and north sides of the city. Jacoby said future projects could eventually include a new water tower or package plant on the city's high-pressure water system.

Officials also discussed a possible wastewater treatment plant expansion estimated at around $30 million as the city prepares for future state wastewater capacity requirements.

Several residents also raised concerns during public comment.

Karen Klein questioned why residents are being asked to pay more while the city continues transferring 6% from public utilities into the city budget. Klein also questioned whether larger users, including Clemens, should absorb more of the costs tied to increased water and sewer demand.

Resident Gabrielle Douglas urged council to slow development-related projects until more attention is given to housing affordability and homelessness concerns within the community.

City officials said during the meeting that Coldwater's utility rates remain lower than several comparable nearby communities.

The increases are scheduled to take effect July 1st.
