(COLUMBUS) - A grassroots group in Ohio is gathering signatures for a proposed constitutional amendment that would limit the size of new data centers built in the state.

The campaign, led by Conserve Ohio, seeks to cap new data centers at 25 megawatts. Organizers say that amount of power could supply roughly 25,000 homes depending on usage patterns.

Supporters of the proposal argue large-scale data centers place pressure on electrical systems, water resources, farmland, and local infrastructure.

The effort is aimed at giving communities more control over large technology developments in their areas.

To qualify for the statewide ballot, organizers must collect more than 413,000 valid signatures from at least 44 Ohio counties by July 1. Campaign leaders say they are aiming for roughly 700,000 signatures.

According to state data cited in reports about the proposal, Ohio has more than 200 data centers, ranking among the top states nationally for such facilities. Most are located in central Ohio.

The proposed amendment would prohibit construction of data centers with an aggregate peak load exceeding 25 megawatts. Ballotpedia reports the measure has already been cleared for signature gathering.

The debate comes as states across the country continue weighing the economic benefits of data centers against concerns involving energy demand, land use, and environmental impact.
