(COLUMBUS) - A new bill in Ohio could give a local legend official status.

Lawmakers have introduced legislation to name the "Loveland Frogman" as the state's official cryptid.

The proposal, House Bill 821, is sponsored by State Representatives Tristan Rader and Jean Schmidt.

The Loveland Frogman is described in the bill as a frog-like creature standing about four feet tall.

The legend dates back to 1972, when police officers reported seeing a similar creature near the Little Miami River.

More recent sightings have also been reported, including claims in 2016.

Supporters say the designation would highlight local folklore and celebrate Ohio's unique cultural stories.
