(BLOOMINGTON) - Five people were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning on Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington following Little 500 weekend events.
Bloomington Police say officers were monitoring a large crowd in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue around 12:25 a.m. when they heard multiple gunshots and moved into the area as people began to run.
Police later confirmed that four women and one teenager were struck by gunfire or bullet fragments. All victims are between 17 and 22 years old.
A 20-year-old woman from Plainfield suffered the most serious injuries after being shot in the abdomen. She is reported to be in stable condition at a Bloomington hospital. The other victims, from South Bend and Indianapolis, suffered minor injuries.
Investigators say the shooting followed a fight between two females near the front of a restaurant along Kirkwood Avenue. Police say multiple individuals pulled handguns and at least two people fired shots.
Authorities say the victims are not believed to have been involved in the initial altercation.
Additional people were hurt while trying to flee the area, suffering cuts and scrapes during the chaos.
Police estimate the crowd at around 3,000 people, gathered to celebrate Little 500 weekend and the end of the academic term. Officials say the event had been peaceful prior to the shooting.
No suspects are in custody at this time, and no weapons have been recovered. The investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Bloomington Police.
