(KENDALLVILLE) - Northeastern Center has secured $300,000 in new funding to continue providing free transportation through its NEC Connect program.
The money comes through a partnership with DeKalb County and the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction using opioid settlement funds.
Northeastern Center says NEC Connect launched in July 2022 and has already provided more than 15,000 free rides, helping people get to appointments and services tied to recovery.
The program is now being narrowed to focus on people with substance use disorder who have a connection to DeKalb County.
As of April 1, riders must self-identify as having a substance use disorder and show some affiliation with DeKalb County, including living, working, receiving services, being on probation or having court involvement there.
Officials say rides are available Monday through Friday from 7:30 in the morning until 7 at night for recovery-related needs, including therapy, doctor visits, probation, court, work and grocery trips.
Trips must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
