(CHURUBUSCO) - A truck carrying ducks euthanized due to bird flu rolled into a ditch Friday morning in Whitley County, prompting a large-scale cleanup and temporary road closures.

The crash happened around 8:20 a.m. on U.S. 33 north of Blue Lake near the Blue River bridge.

Authorities secured the scene and established a 100-foot perimeter as a precaution. Drivers were asked to avoid U.S. 33 between County Road 650 East and 750 East during cleanup operations.

Multiple agencies responded, including local fire, police, health, and emergency management officials, along with Indiana State Police.

Officials said there was no known threat to public health.

The truck was transporting ducks that had been put down as part of efforts to control highly pathogenic avian influenza.

State officials say bird flu remains a low risk to the general public, and properly cooked poultry and eggs remain safe to consume.
