(LANSING_ - The Michigan House has approved $152 million in funding for runway and infrastructure upgrades at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County.

The funding is intended to support plans to station 20 F-15EX fighter jets at the base beginning in fiscal year 2028.

The project was originally announced last year by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and President Donald Trump.

According to Bridge Michigan, the spending measure passed the House by a vote of 65 to 41.

Two Republicans joined most Democrats in opposing the plan, with critics saying lawmakers were given only about 10 minutes' notice before the bill was brought to a vote.

Bridge Michigan reports the funding could be used for runway upgrades, taxiways, culverts and improvements to an on-base museum.

Previous funding commitments include about $63 million from the state and $20 million from Congress, which was short of the $200 million requested by Michigan U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin.

The bill now moves to the Michigan Senate for consideration.

A spokesperson for Governor Whitmer said the administration remains focused on securing the fighter mission for Selfridge and will continue working with state and federal officials on the project.
