(LANSING) - Michigan's new coyote hunting and trapping season opens today and runs through October 14.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the season is intended to address what officials describe as an overabundance of coyotes and to reduce conflicts between species.

Hunters must have a valid base license issued by the DNR to hunt coyotes. Nonresidents who hunt or trap coyotes are required to have a fur harvester license.

The DNR also notes that hunting coyotes with dogs is prohibited between April 16 and July 7.

Officials encourage hunters and trappers to review all state regulations before heading into the field.
