(BLISSFIELD) - Police in Blissfield say a military grenade was safely removed from a village home this week and never posed a danger to the public.

WTOL-TV reports officers were called to the residence after relatives of a recently deceased man reported finding a potentially dangerous device inside the home. Michigan State Police bomb squad technicians responded and determined the grenade had been rendered inert.

Blissfield Police Chief Dale Greenleaf said immediate precautions were taken, but investigators confirmed there was no threat to the community at any time.

Greenleaf urged residents to take all suspicious items seriously and contact authorities rather than handling them themselves.

"First responders are trained to safely handle these situations," he said. "We would rather be called to a device that turns out to be safe than not be called for one that could be dangerous."

No injuries were reported, and the investigation has been closed.
