(ANGOLA) – The City of Angola is letting citizens know about the possibility of a combined sewer overflow.

Angola Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent Jeffrey Gaff says they maintain a sanitary sewer system that is combined with storm sewers. During long periods of constant precipitation or periods of acute, heavy rainfall or snow melt, the sanitary sewage collection system may surcharge and a combined sewer overflow may occur.

Gaff says sewage or wastewater pollution may be present in waters downstream of the Angola WWTP during or for several says after periods of heavy rainfall or snow melt. People who swim in, wade it or ingest this water may get sick. Special precautions should be taken to prevent accidental or intentional ingestion of water. Bacteria levels will usually return to normal within 72 hours at which time normal recreational activities may resume.
