COLDWATER – The Coldwater Department of Public Safety has released more information regarding a weekend stabbing incident.
Director of Public Safety Joseph Scheid says the stabbing suspect has been identified as 38 year old Adam Wallis of Marion, Indiana.
He has been charged with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. That is a felony charge carrying a maximum of up to 10 years in prison or a fine of $5,000, or both.
Wallis has been arraigned in Branch County District Court with bond set at $50,000. He is being held in the Branch County Jail.
Scheid says during their investigation, officers were told that Wallis was a passenger in his brother’s car, and the victim was driving a pick up.
The two starting yelling at each other while driving west on Chicago Road just after 2:30 PM Saturday. Both vehicles stopped for a red light at the southbound ramps of I-69, when the altercation took place.
Police say Wallis stabbed the victim in the chest and then they fought in the street.
Wallis reportedly threw the knife into a grassy field before getting back into his brothers car.
The victim told officers he thought Wallis was going to flee the scene, so he backed up his pickup in front of the car to prevent them from leaving.
Police say Wallis and another man were in Coldwater visiting a marijuana dispensary before the altercation.
Wallis was arrested at the scene, and officers were able to recover the knife.
The victim was taken by Life Care Ambulance to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital and was treated for his injuries.
Also helping at the scene were the Coldwater Fire Department and the Branch County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed the fight or has information, please call Sergeant Cody Longrey at 517-278-4525.
