Two People Arrested For Drug Smuggling At Lakeland Prison

COLDWATER, MI – Two people have been arrested for trying to smuggle items into a Coldwater prison.

The Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Corrections have been conducting a month long investigation into incidents involving drugs and cell phones being smuggled into the Lakeland Correctional Facility, after they were thrown over the fence. Investigators received some advance notice that another attempt may occur in the near future.

At 5 AM on Sunday, August 12, a vehicle containing two people stopped on Marshall Road along the western side of the prison facility. A man exited the car and was quickly apprehended by Department of Corrections officials. A woman attempted to get away in the car, but was stopped within moments by Michigan State Police troopers.

Officers recovered illegal controlled substances and cell phones, as well as additional evidence.

The female suspect is a 28 year old from Detroit and the male suspect is a 59 year old, also from Detroit. Both are being held in the Branch County Jail on multiple felony charges. Their names will not be released until they are arraigned.

The matter is still under investigation, and additional suspects are being looked into by authorities.
