Suspect In Sturgis Double Homicide Shot In Branch County

STURGIS, MI – A man who was wanted in connection with two fatal shootings in Sturgis is dead.

Sturgis Director of Public Safety, Ryan Banaszak said at 10:43 p.m. on Saturday, August 5 his officers were called to the area of South Centreville Road and South Street on a report of a shooting victim.

Officers discovered a 39-year-old Sturgis woman who was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and later pronounced dead.

An investigation revealed 30-year-old David Keith Algarin Jr. as the primary suspect.

While searching for Algarin at the 31000 block of U.S. 12 at the Sweet Lake Mobile Home Community, a second shooting victim, a 61-year-old man, was discovered.

Banaszak said at 11:10 a.m. on Sunday, August 6 his officers located Algarin driving through downtown Sturgis.

The Sturgis Police and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department attempted to stop Algarin, but he fled from officers.

The pursuit entered Bronson in Branch County and ended with Algarin being shot and killed by an officer.

The shooting is being investigated by the Michigan State Police.

A joint press conference between the Michigan State Police and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office will be held Monday, August 7 at 1 p.m. regarding more details on the incident.
