ANGOLA - A fatal crash took place just after midnight on Wednesday, August 2 on Fox Lake Road.

A press release from the Steuben County Sheriff's office said Steuben County Sheriff deputies responded to an accident on Fox Lake Road near the Fox Lake Public Access Site in rural Pleasant Township.

Deputies first on the scene located a passenger car fully engulfed in flames near a utility pole with extensive damage to the driver's side indicating the car had collided with the pole prior to catching fire.

A preliminary crash scene investigation by the sheriff's department determined, "a red 2009 Mazda RX8 passenger car was traveling westbound on Fox Lake Road at what appeared to be high rate of speed. As the driver was (navigating) a curve in the roadway just east of the Fox Lake Public Access Site, the vehicle went off of the north side of the roadway causing the driver to overcorrect back to the south. The vehicle then began to yaw and slid out of control before colliding with a utility pole and catching fire."

Deputies discovered a deceased male in the driver seat once the fire was extinguished.

The name of the driver is being withheld until a positive identification is made and his next of kin is notified by the Steuben County Coroner's Office.

The accident remains under investigation by the Steuben County Sheriff's Department.

Assisting the Steuben County Sheriff's Department at the scene were the Angola Police, the Angola Fire Department, and the Steuben County Coroner's Office.
