Honeysett's Salary To Remain The Same
By: Mike Stiles - Thursday, December 30, 2021

(CONSTANTINE) – Constantine Village Manager Mark Honeysett's salary will remain the same for the remainder of his current contract.

Honeysett has been the Village Manage for 15 years. He also later took on the duties of the Constantine Police Chief, a position he held before becoming the Village Manager.

During a recent meeting, the Constantine Village Council looked at the minutes of a personnel committee meeting on Honeysett's performance. Those minutes provided a list of Honeysett's duties along with the hours he worked. It stated that he under reports the actual hours he works.

Honeysett sent a letter to the personnel committee and suggested that his salary be reduced because he had resigned as Police Chief, following the hiring of Dan Thayer as the new Police Chief in September.

In the letter, Honeysett shard that he received no additional compensation for being the Police Chief until the hiring of Thayer. He said that's because the salary he receives as Village Manager is comparable to other communities the size of Constantine.

Honeysett's letter says that based on a Michigan Municipal League survey, the current average police chief salary is just over $68,000. He says that assuming seven years ago the average annual chief's salary was $60,000, and increased 2 percent every year, Constantine saved approximately $446,000 over that seven-year period where Honeysett served as Police Chief.

With Thayer being a retired Michigan State Trooper, Honeysett says Thayer's health insurance is provided by the state, a net savings of $17,000 for the village.

The Village Council voted to honor the personnel committee's recommendation to maintain Honeysett's current salary, with a provision for an increase when his contract expires in March, 2022.
