EAST LANSING – Michigan student-athletes will have to undergo COVID-19 testing for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.

During a media update Friday, Michigan High School Athletic Association Executive Director Mark Uyl announced that a new order had been issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Uyl says as of April 2, any remaining winter sports athletes would have to have COVID-19 tests. Also as of April 2, all Spring sport athletes would also be required to have COVID-19 tests.

How frequently they would have to be tested is still not known. The MDHHS will release more information this weekend. Uyl also shared that the testing would be for any student-athletes ages 13 to 19. And it would also include not just athletes, but also any student organizations. The tests would still be provided to the schools by the MDHHS at no charge, just like they have been.

Uyl emphasized that the majority of Winter sports post season tournaments will be completed by April 2.
