Sturgis Cemetery Rates Going Up
By: Mike Stiles - Thursday, September 17, 2020

STURGIS – Rates will be going up at both Sturgis cemeteries.

During a recent meeting, the Sturgis City Commission was presented with a proposal to increase the rates for both Oaklawn Cemetery and Sturgis Memorial Gardens.

Director of Public Services Rick Miller says the rates were recently looked at and reviewed by City staff for Oaklawn and Sturgis Memorial Gardens. Miller says costs have gone up since the last time the rates were increased in 2012. Miller proposed a 5 percent increase in each of the next two year.

The current cemetery cost for Oaklawn is $814. The increase would make the rate $855 in 2021 and $898 in 2020. For Sturgis Memorial Gardens, the current cost is $750. The increase would make the cost $788 in 2021 and $827 in 2022.

Miller says under the current rate structure, there were discounts of between 10 and 45 percent for City residents being buried in the cemeteries. The new rate structure would give a 20 percent discount to City residents.

In related business, Miller suggested opening up a new section of Oaklawn Cemetery. It would be Section RR along South Street near the maintenance building. This would provide 67 double lots available for sale.

The Commissioners approved both requests by unanimous votes.
