Steuben County Sheriff's Office Warns About Scam
By: Mike Stiles - Monday, September 14, 2020

ANGOLA – Another scam has been reported in Northeast Indiana.

Steuben County Sheriff Rodney Robinson says his office has been informed of another telephone scam in the county. Citizens say they have received calls that seem to be coming from local phone numbers with 316 or 667 prefixes. The caller says they are representing the Social Security Administration and tells the citizen their social security number has been compromised and has been used illegally, and criminal charges have been filed against them.

The caller tells the citizen they need to make a payment to take care of the issue or they will be arrested.

Robinson says the Social Security Administration does not call citizens or make demands over the telephone, such as asking for personal information or payments to take care of legal issues. He also says his department will not arrest anyone for the Social Security Administration.

Robinson reminds citizens to not give out any personal information over the phone to anyone.
