(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles urges Hoosiers to drive sober as New Year's Eve celebrations approach, warning that impaired driving remains one of the deadliest dangers on the road during the holidays.

BMV officials say December consistently ranks among the worst months for drunk-driving fatalities nationwide. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that in December 2023 alone, 1,038 people died in alcohol-related crashes.

The BMV says alcohol affects driving ability well before someone reaches the legal limit. At a blood alcohol concentration of .02, drivers begin to lose visual sharpness and struggle to handle multiple tasks. At .05, coordination drops and steering becomes more difficult. At .08, drivers face impaired judgment, slower reaction times, and reduced concentration. Higher levels significantly affect lane control, braking, and the ability to process visual and auditory information.

To reduce the risk of crashes, the BMV encourages drivers to plan ahead before heading out for holiday celebrations. Officials urge Hoosiers to arrange a designated driver, rideshare, or taxi and to avoid drinking altogether if they plan to drive.

The BMV also reminds motorists to wear seat belts during high-traffic holiday travel and to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.

State officials say responsible driving choices can help ensure a safe start to 2026 on Indiana roads.
