(ANGOLA) - Pokagon State Park will host a First Day Hike on New Year's Day as part of a statewide slate of outdoor events at Indiana state parks.

The Pokagon event begins at 2 p.m. on January 1 at the park's CCC Shelter. A brief Friends of Pokagon meeting and volunteer recognition will be followed by a guided 2.5-mile hike on a moderate trail. Light refreshments will be provided after the hike.

First Day Hikes are held annually on state parks across the country. The program encourages people to start the year outdoors and active and takes place in all 50 states.

Across Indiana, dozens of state parks, lakes, and recreation areas will offer First Day Hikes on New Year's Day. Activities range from short, accessible walks to longer, more rugged hikes, with many parks offering warm drinks, snacks, or interpretive programs.

Among the participating parks are Chain O'Lakes State Park, Indiana Dunes State Park, Turkey Run State Park, Brown County State Park, and Spring Mill State Park.

Participants should dress for winter conditions and wear sturdy footwear.
