COLDWATER, Mich. - (WLKI) - A Coldwater man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he made threats of mass violence against law enforcement and community locations.
Twenty-eight-year-old Michael Paul Young was arraigned in Branch County District Court, where Magistrate Valerie White set bond at $250,000 cash or surety.
Young is charged with making a false report or threat of terrorism. Prosecutors also filed a habitual offender enhancement because of a previous felony conviction.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the alleged threats were made Saturday while a Branch County sheriff's deputy was transporting Young from Portage to the Branch County Jail.
Authorities allege Young made statements about planting bombs at the Branch County courthouse, the police department and multiple other Coldwater locations. He is also accused of threatening murder, kidnapping and violence against law enforcement officers.
The terrorism charge carries a possible penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
Young had been transported back to Branch County after authorities say he violated probation stemming from a previous resisting-arrest case. He remains held in the Branch County Jail.
The case was reported by WTVB. The charges are allegations, and Young is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
