(INDIANAPOLIS) - A controversial congressional redistricting plan that sailed through the Indiana House now faces a tough battle in the Senate, where debate opened Monday and support remains uncertain.

Several Republican senators have joined Democrats in opposing the bill, even as President Trump warns he'll back primary challengers against GOP lawmakers who vote no.

Public testimony went on for hours, with 127 people signed up to speak. Opinions were sharply divided.

Opponents argued Hoosiers want better roads and healthcare, not a political map they say is being forced on the state. Supporters claimed the new districts would counter what they call Democratic gerrymandering in other states.

Protesters from Allen County even chartered a bus to the Statehouse, urging senators who've spoken out against the plan to hold their ground.

The Senate Elections Committee continues its review this week, with amendments expected before a full chamber vote.
