(COLDWATER) - Michigan law enforcement is stepping up patrols statewide as the annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign kicks off for the holiday season.

The high-visibility crackdown runs December 11 through New Year's Day with zero tolerance for drunk or drug-impaired driving. State Police and local departments will increase patrols and use sobriety checkpoints to catch impaired motorists during a time when alcohol-related crashes sharply increase.

The push comes as Michigan continues to see troubling numbers. In 2023, 41% of all traffic deaths involved alcohol or drugs. Over recent holiday seasons, 30 people have been killed in crashes, 13 of them involving impairment.

Officials remind drivers that impaired driving is entirely preventable and urge everyone to plan a sober ride before celebrating this holiday season.
