COLDWATER, Mich. (WLKI) - Coldwater Director of Police and Fire Safety Joe Scheid died suddenly Monday evening after collapsing at the city's Public Safety Building on Division Street.
An official statement from the City of Coldwater is expected later today.
Scheid began working for the Coldwater Police Department in December 1996 after graduating from Grand Valley State University and its law enforcement academy. He was promoted to corporal and road patrol sergeant in 2001, became deputy director of public safety in 2012 and was named director of public safety in 2019.
Scheid also taught as an adjunct professor at Kellogg Community College.
Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker said the community lost "a wonderful person, leader, advocate and friend to all in the Coldwater and Branch County community."
Scheid is survived by his wife, Jodie, and two daughters.
