(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana has set a new record for the most confirmed tornadoes in a single year.

As of June 24, Indiana had 73 confirmed tornadoes in 2026. The previous record was 72 tornadoes in 2011.

Reliable tornado records go back to 1950.

The count reflects the actual number of confirmed tornadoes, not preliminary tornado reports, which can include duplicates.

Record June

June has been especially active across Indiana.

The state has had 53 confirmed tornadoes in June alone, setting a new monthly record.

Surveys from the June 21 and 22 storms confirmed 17 tornadoes from Sunday's outbreak. That outbreak now ranks ninth among the largest tornado outbreaks in Indiana history.

The June 11 outbreak produced 26 tornadoes, ranking fourth in state history.

That means Indiana has had two of its 10 largest tornado outbreaks in just the last two weeks.

Illinois Also Sets Record

Illinois has also set a new annual tornado record. As of June 24, Illinois had 173 confirmed tornadoes this year.

Weather observers note that improvements in radar technology and the widespread use of phones have made it easier to document and confirm tornadoes than in past decades.
