(INDIANA) - Monarch butterflies are returning across Indiana as their summer breeding season gets underway.

After spending the winter in Mexico and migrating north through the spring, monarchs are now arriving in the Hoosier State in search of milkweed.

Milkweed is the plant monarchs rely on to lay their eggs.

Over the next several weeks, residents may be able to spot monarch caterpillars, chrysalises and adult butterflies as a new generation develops in Indiana.

People with milkweed growing in their yards or gardens are encouraged to watch for monarch activity.

Monarchs can also be safely raised with children if they are provided fresh milkweed and the butterflies are released after they hatch and are ready to go.
