(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana drivers could see gas prices rise in May if a temporary tax break is not extended.
The state's sales tax on gasoline is set to increase by about 6 cents per gallon next month if Governor Mike Braun does not continue his suspension of the tax.
The rate is determined each month based on average gas prices. It was set at 17.2 cents per gallon before the suspension began in April and is scheduled to rise to 23.3 cents in May.
Braun's current suspension runs through May 8, when he is expected to decide whether to extend it.
Gas prices have fallen since early April, dropping from more than $4 a gallon to around $3.76 statewide.
Indiana drivers also pay a federal gas tax and a separate state excise tax, which together make up a significant portion of the total price at the pump.
Some lawmakers are now calling for a broader tax break. State Representative Greg Porter is urging the governor to also suspend the state's excise tax, which could lead to bigger savings for drivers.
Braun has said extending that relief may require action from the legislature.
