(BERNE) - Indiana State Police say a Berne police officer responding to a suspicious person call struck an unconscious person lying in the roadway Saturday night.
Troopers say it happened just after 10:45 on Hendricks Street near Wind Ridge Trail.
The initial investigation indicates the person, who was wearing dark clothing, was lying partially in the roadway when the officer, who was actively searching for the reported suspicious person, hit them.
State police say the officer immediately called for medical assistance and began rendering aid until additional responders arrived.
The crash remains under active investigation.
Because the case is still in its early stages, state police are not releasing the identities of either the injured person or the officer involved.
