(INDIANAPOLIS) - A Trine University student is being recognized among the state's top first-generation college scholars.
Laci Roy, a sophomore from Ligonier majoring in biology, is one of 28 students statewide selected for the "Realizing the Dream" scholarship through Independent Colleges of Indiana.
Recipients, representing each of Indiana's private, nonprofit colleges, were honored during a February 28 banquet at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis.
Roy, who is in Trine's direct admit physician assistant program, has earned Dean's List or President's List honors each semester.
As part of the recognition, Roy selected her seventh-grade teacher, Victoria Replogle of West Noble Middle School, as an influential educator. Replogle advocated for Roy to enter the honors program, a move Roy credits with helping shape her academic path.
Each student receives a $5,000 scholarship, funded through Lilly Endowment Inc., while honored educators receive $1,000 for professional development.
Roy says her goal is to become a physician assistant and use her education to help change lives.
