(FORT WAYNE) - A major milestone is coming up for Honor Flight Northeast Indiana.
The organization will send its 55th flight to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, April 22, carrying 85 veterans to visit memorials honoring their service.
According to organizers, the group includes three Korean War veterans, 13 Cold War veterans, 66 Vietnam veterans, and three who served during other conflicts. Two of those veterans are Bronze Star recipients.
Since its founding, Honor Flight Northeast Indiana has transported more than 4,200 veterans to the nation's capital.
A public welcome home celebration is planned the night of April 22 at Fort Wayne International Airport. Supporters are encouraged to arrive around 8:30 p.m. to greet the veterans as they return.
Organizers say the flights are made possible through community support, with the nonprofit continuing its mission to recognize and honor those who served.
