(FORT WAYNE) - Dozens of NIPSCO employees gathered outside a company facility in Fort Wayne Thursday morning as contract negotiations between the utility and union workers continue.

According to WANE-TV, workers represented by the United Steelworkers Union held a solidarity event outside NIPSCO's Hale Avenue facility to show support for efforts to secure what the union calls a "fair and equitable contract."

Similar demonstrations were also held at other NIPSCO locations across Indiana.

Union officials emphasized there is no strike or work stoppage, and employees who participated did so on their personal time outside scheduled work hours.

In a statement, the union said it hopes to reach an agreement that respects employees' contributions, ensures fair working conditions and supports the long-term success of the company and the communities it serves.

In response to the demonstrations, NIPSCO said it respects employees' decisions to gather on their own time and that the company continues to engage in good-faith negotiations toward a contract that supports employees, customers and the communities it serves.
