(HUNTINGTON COUNTY) - Huntington county leaders have imposed a temporary freeze on permits for data centers, battery storage facilities and carbon capture projects while officials study their potential impact on the community.
Commissioners approved the moratorium to allow time for research, public meetings and the creation of clear local regulations before any proposals move forward. Officials emphasized there are currently no active applications for such projects.
County leaders say the pause will help address concerns about water consumption, energy demand, infrastructure costs and the safety of carbon sequestration efforts. Without the moratorium, officials warned a company could submit an application and force the county to set rules without adequate preparation.
The review process could take a year or longer as commissioners consult land-use experts and gather input from residents through public forums.
Officials stress the action is not a ban but a precaution to ensure any future projects align with community priorities and protect the interests of the county's roughly 37,000 residents.
