(JONESVILLE) - The heroic actions of a Jonesville police officer saved a man during a house fire Wednesday night. A two-story home at 228 West Chicago Street was destroyed in the blaze. Jonesville Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 6:33 p.m. Jonesville Police Sgt. David Martin arrived first and found the house engulfed in heavy smoke and flames. Two residents had already escaped and told Martin that a third man was still inside, unable to get out because of injuries from a recent fall. Martin went into the burning home and helped the injured man to safety. Fire crews from Litchfield and Hillsdale City responded to assist, and firefighters brought the blaze under control shortly after 7 p.m. All three residents survived without serious injuries, but a family dog died after becoming trapped on the second floor. Firefighters remained on scene for about three hours, clearing the area just after 10:30 p.m. The State Fire Marshal's office is expected to investigate the cause of the fire.
