(AUBURN) - A DeKalb County nonprofit is working to bring the county's first free public splash pad to downtown Auburn.

Fortify Life has launched a fundraising campaign for "Fortify Play," a proposed outdoor park and splash pad planned for Connection Drive near West Seventh Street. According to project organizers, the development would include an accessible playground and a 10-feature splash pad designed for children of all abilities.

The nonprofit says the project will be fully fenced for safety and include features such as a zip line, merry-go-round, swing set, shaded pavilion and restroom facilities.

Fortify Life Development Manager Sydney Kent said the organization must raise $1.5 million to move the project forward. Roughly one-third of that goal has already been secured through early donor and community partner support.

The project has received approval from the DeKalb County Plan Commission. Next steps include obtaining an Improvement Location Permit from the City of Auburn and a State Design Release for the planned shade structure.

Organizers describe Fortify Play as more than a playground, saying the goal is to create a space that encourages connection across generations and provides inclusive recreation opportunities for families throughout the county.

Fundraising efforts will include dine-to-donate events, T-shirt design contests, sponsorship opportunities and direct online donations. Community members can learn more, view renderings and contribute at fortifylife.org/fortifyplay.

If completed, the project would mark the first free public splash pad in DeKalb County.
