(BLOOMINGTON) -- Indiana University has announced plans to commission a statue honoring longtime Hoosiers men's basketball coach Bob Knight.

The announcement came during halftime ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of Indiana's undefeated 1976 national championship team. University officials said the bronze statue will be placed inside the south lobby of Assembly Hall, alongside statues commemorating the 1976 title team.

Knight coached Indiana from 1971 to 2000 and is one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history. During his tenure, he led the Hoosiers to three national championships, an NIT title, and 11 Big Ten Conference championships, compiling a career record of 662 wins and 239 losses at IU.

Knight passed away in 2023 at the age of 83.

University leaders say the statue is intended to recognize Knight's lasting impact on Indiana basketball and his role in shaping one of the most storied programs in college sports history.
