Car Talk with Brett Morick of Steuben Automotive: The Surrounding Danger of Short Winter Commutes 2/3/26

By: Andy St. John • February 3, 2026

In this episode of Car Talk on WLKI 100.3, Brett Morick from Steuben Automotive joins Andy St. John on 100.3 WLKI to reveal a surprising winter threat: ice buildup inside your exhaust system. When you only drive short distances in the cold--such as a mile to work or school--condensation collects in the pipes and mufflers without ever getting hot enough to evaporate. This can result in gallons of frozen water that eventually plug the system and prevent your car from starting.

  • The Problem: Short trips allow moisture to puddle and freeze in the exhaust, sometimes filling a two-inch pipe completely.
  • The Fix: Take your car for a 20-minute highway drive once a week to reach full operating temperature and blow out accumulated moisture.
  • Maintenance Tip: Regular car washes help prevent "cold soaking" by removing ice and salt buildup from the exterior.
