(LANSING) - A bill that would limit cellphone use in Michigan classrooms cleared the state House on Wednesday, reviving legislation that failed just months ago.
House Bill 4141 passed by a 99-10 bipartisan vote after being voted down in July. The proposal would ban K-12 students from using smartphones during instructional time, while still allowing use between classes and during lunch. Schools would retain the option to enforce stricter policies.
The bill had stalled last year despite backing from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who called for action on classroom phone use during her 2025 State of the State address. Wednesday's vote marks the first time this legislative session that a defeated bill returned and advanced.
Supporters argue the measure would reduce classroom distractions and improve learning conditions. The bill now moves to the Michigan Senate for consideration.
